Penske (PL Canada) Safety Team Lead in Woodstock, Ontario

Description:

Position Summary:

Coach and mentor location drivers to achieve an accident free environment while maintaining full compliance with all applicable regulatory agencies.

Be flexible to work in the afternoon / evening at least a few nights per month to be able to see drivers and assist with issues on different shifts.

Major Responsibilities:

Monitor effectiveness of driver safety metrics including but not limited to:

Worklete:

  • Ensuring all drivers are trained and up to date on Worklete programs. If not, advise reason why prior to weekly safety call and plan to maintain goal. Responsible for creating a plan to ensure 100% compliance.

Smith System:

  • Ensuring all drivers are trained and up to date on Smith System programs (behind the wheel and online). If not, advise reason why prior to weekly safety call and plan to maintain goal. Responsible for creating a plan to ensure 100% compliance.

  • Driver On Boarding / Training / Probation

  • Compliance Follow Up Requests

  • Ensure compliance with regulations and policies

  • Responsible for collecting data and submitting to the proper group, information regarding driver qualification files, which is sent via email from DQops for the following items:

Non Compliance:

  • Required Documentation including:

  • Driver medical cards

  • Annual review of driving record

  • Random drug and alcohol tests

  • Required documents for operating (for example - licensing, self-certifications, etc.)

  • Roadside inspections

Safety:

  • Provide Associates with communication, training, feedback and direction to ensure safe performance.

  • Safety Audits

  • Driver log audits

  • Random tractor and trailer inspections (for example - securement, spill kits, missing documents – permits, CVOR, etc.)

  • Mock DOT/MTO inspections – For example: if we are made aware of a MTO/DOT campaign for roadside inspections, schedule mock inspections with drivers in yard to coach and counsel on potential issues.

Accidents:

  • In the event of an accident, Safety Site Supervisor is responsible for the following items:

  • Report to scene of accident to assess situation and possible root cause

  • Take photos

  • Interview parties involved (driver)

  • Ensure all documents required have been completed

  • Log data in Risk Management and upload required files to portal

  • Set up safety call with driver involved, management and Corporate Safety Team

  • Ensure post call, Gensuite is completed and closed

  • Provide countermeasures to Ops Mgr and GM after conducting accident/injury investigations

  • Ride along with driver post-accident to ensure driver is fit and comfortable to return to work

Weekly Safety Meeting:

  • Be prepared to speak to all topics concerning operational area on weekly safety call review.

  • Drivers out of compliance and plan for resolution

  • Training out of compliance and plan for resolution

  • Conduct semi-annual safety meeting with drivers

  • Monthly Facility Inspections

  • Ensure we are in compliance with all codes and all equipment is in working and safe order

People:

  • Interview and make hiring recommendations for hourly associates

  • New Hires & Training

  • Notification of new hire comes via Recruiting to Safety Lead and Management

  • Once in receipt of email stating driver is clear for orientation, take the following steps

  • Coordinate with lead driver to set up date for orientation. If there is no lead driver appointed, contact new hire directly

  • Conduct orientation

  • Once orientation is completed, ensure training is logged in Gensuite

  • Coordinate with management, once orientation is complete, for training plan and schedule

  • Follow up weekly with new hire to ensure all questions and concerns are addressed

Operations:

  • Provide relief coverage for operation as needed

  • Proactively plan work assignments to ensure effective use of fleet/warehouse equipment

  • Ensure all maintenance documentation and permits are completed and submitted to appropriate vendor and/or authority

  • Implement measures to improve productivity

  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required

  • Bachelor's degree preferred

  • 1 years of Health & Safety or Operations Management experience with proven leadership ability required

  • Should have knowledge of the following:

-Effective Hazard Identification, Risk Assessment, and Control Techniques

-Accident Investigation Techniques

-MTO Regulations

-Workplace Health and Safety Regulations

-CLC Part II

  • 1 year of customer service experience preferred

  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, Access, and Powerpoint

  • Ability to work rotating shifts (Mornings, Afternoons and Overnights) required

  • Strong problem solving and organization skills required

  • Ability to work cooperatively and effectively with others in a team environment

  • Regular, predictable, full attendance is an essential function of the job

  • Willingness to travel as necessary, work the required schedule, work at the specific location required, complete a Penske employment application, submit to a reference verification (to include past employment and education) are required.
