Penske Data Platform Analyst in Reading, Pennsylvania


Position Summary:

This position will be responsible for executing tasks related to administration of Greenplum and other Big Data environments. The Data Platform Analyst should have operational expertise such as good troubleshooting skills, understanding of system’s capacity, bottlenecks, and basics of memory, CPU, OS, storage, and networks. Good knowledge of Linux and familiarity with open source configuration management and deployment tools and Linux scripting is required. Knowledge of Troubleshooting Core Java Applications is a plus.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Oversee the Big Data Platform for Penske – specifically Green plum database environment on Cloud. Meet or exceed the internal customer expectations in terms of availability, reliability, performance and support.

  • Monitor the technology roadmap development and deployment. Patching and upgrade schedule development and deployment of Greenplum/Big Data on Cloud

  • Administer all platforms on supported technologies which meet the customer needs.

  • Support technology selection, building, testing, deployment, support and documentation of the Data Platforms related to Big Data

  • Ensure that Penske Data Platforms are on the latest technology stack as per the business needs.

  • Support Big Data Platform initiatives for the enterprise.

  • Deliver key projects and initiatives on time, budget and schedule while meeting business needs

  • Data Security

  • Ensure that data is secured as per Penske IT security policies

  • Other projects as assigned by the supervisor


  • Bachelor's degree required, Computer Science major preferred

  • Masters degree preferred

  • At least 5 years of experience with administration of Greenplum and other Big Data environments.

  • Good knowledge of database administration (design, installation & troubleshooting) of Greenplum 4.3.x.x - 5. X and Unix or Linux platform

  • Gemfire or in- memory solution experience is also a huge plus.

  • Background in relational databases like Oracle/Teradata is helpful.

  • Experience with Linux scripting is required (Perl and/or Korn shell/Bourne Shell/ Python)

  • Understanding of basic SQL commands necessary to perform administrative functions

  • Having Knowledge in Greenplum Architecture, Configuring Greenplum system, Enabling high availability features, backing up and restoring databases, Expanding Greenplum system and Monitoring Greenplum system

  • Complete understanding of back up / error recovery and Disaster recovery of Databases, in-memory databases.

  • Defining and Managing the database objects and data in Greenplum.

  • Having knowledge in GPLOAD and GPFDIST in Greenplum.

  • Having knowledge in External tables and VACCUM in Greenplum.

  • Managing the Schema, Table Space and Partitioning in Greenplum.

  • Broad understanding and experience of real-time analytics, NOSQL technologies(e.g. Hbase, Cassandra, MongoDB)

  • Fluency / expertise in the following are very beneficial

  • Experience with:

-Pivotal Big Data Suite – Greenplum, Gemfire, Spring XD and Rabbit MQ

-Environments: Amazon Web Services, Cloud Foundry and vCloud Air

-Big Data Technologies – Hadoop, Kafka, Zookeeper, Hbase, Hive etc.

  • Should be able to support Java application.

  • Regular, predictable, full attendance is an essential function of the job
