Penske IBM I System Administrator and DBA in Reading, Pennsylvania


Position Summary:

Database Administrators (DBA’s) are responsible for working with DBA’s, developers, web masters and other associates to build a stable and effective database environment to support critical applications. A DBA may be considered as the database lead on a development team, for their expertise to build physical databases.

Please note that applicants who have demonstrated the aptitude, interest and potential to be a DBA through academics or technical training may be considered for this developmental position !

Major Responsibilities:

  • Query reviews Oversight - review new queries being implemented and their effect on our existing data models.

  • Assist DBA’s and Architects in formulating standards and best practices.

  • Assist in the evaluation and research of certain components for third-party software solutions.

  • Demonstrate a consultative approach in working with process owners and IT teams to understand business requirements and translate them into technical solutions.

  • Assist development teams in the creation of technical specifications, SQL best practices by conducting SQL reviews, analyzing database production issues and assisting in database version upgrades/patches.

  • Regularly monitor and tune databases and follow the best practices for archives and purges as defined by application owners and the Senior DBA’s.

  • Assist in DB troubleshooting during system issues.

  • Keep the supported database systems running based on the defined user SLA.

  • Other projects as assigned by the supervisor.


  • Some hands-on database project experience is required.

  • Training or experience in indexing best practices is required.

  • High school diploma or equivalent required

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related computer field is preferred

  • Knowledge of the DB2 for IBM i architecture is preferred.

  • Programming experience in (RPG or JAVA) training preferred.

  • Some knowledge of DB2 for IBM i SQL optimizers is preferred

  • Understand application and database development life cycles/methodologies

  • Understand database administration, monitoring and data processing concepts.

  • Familiar with ERWIN data modeling tool and experience with creation of logical data models.

  • Familiarization of the DB2 for i database environment is required.

  • Operations navigator experience is preferred.

  • Willingness to travel as necessary, work the required schedule, work at the specific location required, complete Penske employment application, submit to a background investigation (to include past employment, education, and criminal history) and drug screening are required.
