Penske Commodity Manager in Reading, Pennsylvania


Position Summary:

The Commodity Manager/Leader, reporting to the Vice President of Sourcing, will apply strategic sourcing expertise and will utilize a multi-step process to manage assigned categories and suppliers. The position will recommend and implement solutions to internal customer needs through effective project and contract management, supplier relationship management and professionalized communications. This position advises and guides the business regarding the implementation and integration of strategic sourcing philosophies and techniques to meet the needs of our internal customers.

Major Responsibilities:

-Work collaboratively to develop and deliver focused sourcing strategies by utilizing a multi-step sourcing process. This will include developing project plans, forming cross functional teams, planning resources, selecting suppliers, establishing KPIs, negotiating contracts, and implementing improved and new processes.

-Conduct market research and analysis using qualitative and quantitative skills that will result in recommendations to Sourcing leadership and cross functional teams on new opportunities, market trends, and commodity forecasts.

-Develop and manage contract portfolio to minimize risk exposure and capture benefits through process and contract language standardization.

-Coordinate and fulfill Sourcing’s functional communication plan for managed categories, including message consistency oversight, development and implementation of professionalized communication plans

-Ability to negotiate pricing, service level expectations, performance measures and contractual terms and conditions in coordination with Sourcing Leadership, stakeholders, and Legal.

-Ensure project methodologies and commodity strategies are followed, through standardized project management, thorough communication and ongoing continuous improvement

-Other projects as assigned by manager



-Bachelor’s Degree required, preferably in Supply Chain Management, Engineering, Economics, or technical field

-5 years’ experience in strategic sourcing, indirect spend management, supplier relationship management

-Demonstrated proficiency in negotiations and contract management; balanced with the ability to develop and build rapport with suppliers

  • Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma, and/or Project Management experience desired specifically in regard to Strategic Sourcing

-Strong project management skills coupled with proven ability to execute and deliver on commitments

-Proficient MS Office applications, specifically in Excel, Power Point, and Outlook

-Willingness to travel as necessary, work the required schedule, work at the specific location required, complete Penske employment application, submit to a background investigation (to include past employment, education, and criminal history) and drug screening are required.
