Position Summary:

As a Senior Data Science Engineer, this role will help implement Penske’s Big Data Strategy and drive the next generation Supply Chain & Logistics Analytics. Works on projects that have organization-wide impact. The projects at this level are large and complex, often involving more than one product line. The Senior Engineer works on 1 – 2 projects concurrently. Provides analysis and assists in development of approach and scope on each project. Such efforts require cross-functional involvement with customers, vendors and suppliers.

Qualified candidates for this role will have at least 3-5 years of experience designing and building machine learning applications. A degree in engineering, statistics, or applied math is required and advanced degrees preferred. This position could be based out of Cleveland, Detroit, or Reading depending on the ideal candidate.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Assists in the development and implementation of Enterprise Big Data Strategy and framework at Penske Logistics

  • Develops innovative models, tools and algorithms that enable Penske and its customers make data driven decisions and gain deep actionable insight from our rich and rapidly growing data across all product offerings.

  • Works with cross functional teams – including business, IT, Finance, etc. - to proactively identify and prioritize project opportunities.

  • Assists supervisor in creating business case documents that not only explore various solution options but clearly articulates recommendations and justifications to gain leadership approval.

  • Other duties and responsibilities as directed by supervisor



  • 3 – 5 years related experience with at least 2 years experience in designing and building machine learning applications using both structured and unstructured datasets.

  • Demonstrated experience with two or more machine learning techniques including logistic regression, decision trees, random forests and clustering.

  • Practical experience programming using Python, R or other high level scripting languages is required. Knowledge and experience with SQL is required.

  • Master’s degree in Engineering, Operations Research, Statistics, Applied Math or related quantitative field preferred, Bachelors required

  • General understanding of the logistics, transportation and warehousing industry and passionate about data and solving big industry wide challenges

  • Willingness to travel as necessary, work the required schedule, complete Penske employment application, submit to a background investigation (to include past employment, education, and criminal history) and drug screening are required.
